I first started MUDding around 1999 or 2000, I believe. After just a few months, I was recruited as a builder on the first MUD I really stuck around on, until the MUD was forced out of existence when the absentee owner stopped paying for the shell. Afterwards I drifted through a few more, sometimes just playing, sometimes building, until I started trying to create my own near the end of that year, and very unsuccessfully, at that. At the time I could only build, albeit not well enough for my tastes, and didn't really have any other talents to fall back on, so it's no wonder why I never pulled it off. Over the past few years I've played countless MUDs, so I've done pretty much everything, and worked on even more MUDs. I've probably thrown out code for more systems than a lot of 'coders' have even written to begin with. Outside of my MUDding history, I've grown up in Iowa, specifically the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area, but was originally born in California. I'm a huge Smash Bros. addict, and a fan of any gaming that focuses on gameplay over all else. I do tend to come off as a bit of a jerk, but whether I like it or not I'm slowly realizing I'm a fairly nice person. |

So my best friend recently dragged me into a new card game, despite my having sworn them off after Magic began to rapid-fire new expansions at us. It's called "The Spoils", and it plays very similarly to Magic, with a few major differences and a lot more semantic ones, but the great thing about it is that it doesn't take itself seriously at all; among my own collection are the Very Big Hat of Invisibility, the Unexpected Booby Snake, the Ritual of the Screaming Cheese, and several pairs of Swordchucks. Anyway, for the past week I've been playing against my best friend every other day, he plays a Greed (Yellow) and Elitism (Black) deck, which is pretty much White & Green for anyone that has experience with Magic, and I play Rage (Blue) and Obsession (Purple) deck, which is about like playing combined Red, White, and Blue in Magic. The other color in Spoils is Red, which is Deception. One of the biggest differences between the Spoils and Magic would be the Faction card. You have to use one, and it doesn't count towards your 75 card deck. So far the only faction is the Tournament Faction, but the concept is appetizing. Factions can have built in abilities (the tournament faction, for instance, can pay to draw cards or play extra resources), and define their own starting hand size and influence (life), as well as having their own 'restore rule' (which is akin to the untap phase). Back to my story, though, the interesting thing about the two of us playing against each other is that I can build decks extremely well, but have terrible luck, while he can't build a deck to save his life, but has incredible luck and is better at thinking several turns ahead than I am, so we're usually pretty evenly matched, but he asked me to help him beef up his deck. Of course, being a usually nice guy, I helped him out by removing all the useless crap and replacing it all with more staple resources and cards that now give me nightmares. Almost all of the Elitism cards in his deck somehow allow him to search for something else from his deck (including a piece of gear that lets him search for ANY CARD when its wearer leaves play) so he always has what he wants, and he uses the Horsemajigs of the Apocalypse, which all buff each other passively. As if that weren't enough to put me under, the rest of his deck can either buffer my damage or recover his faction's influence outright, and one card even states that he effectively cannot lose the game while it remains in play. I went from a 3:1 win/loss ratio to a 1:3 win/loss ratio. Serves me right for helping the competition... That's all for my rant, but if anyone reading is interested in card games at all, you should check out the Spoils. It's a great game, IF you can find a shop that carries it. | ||
