Bio:

Well I'm not one to talk about myself to random perverted internet strangers, let alone the freakish of all internet people, us Mudders. So I'll give my street credits.

Started mudding in 1994 after being introduced to the game by a friend. Like most people I said what the hell is this and it took me 6 months to finally get into it. 'Ragnarok' (defunct) was my first mud, a Rom 2.3. Learned the basics there. Moved onto the 'Shadowy Wastelands' (defunct) until it closed, then went into the Zone Construction sector for a couple of years, ended up as an Immortal Staffer on a Rot 1.4 mud called 'Final Fantasy' which committed suicide by converting over to God Wars. Having the urge to create my own world I started my own mud when Final Fantasy made the code switch.

Without any knowledge of how a mud actually ran code wise or even how to navigate linux, I began a mud called Waterdeep, named by my brother and with the purpose of (A) creating a Forgotten Realms based mud and (B) A very familiar name that would attract Dungeons and Dragon players. With the help of a few mud friends we were able to bring the mud online August 12th 1997 at 10:34pm Eastern Standard Time (obviously that date is burned into my mind). I could have never foreseen what the future would bring.

I try and not to stroke my ego but Waterdeep did spend a good amount of time listing high in the ranks of muds. Oddly enough there were plenty of muds with better codes and zones, but these are just statistical numbers. We spent roughly from 1998 to late 1999 at the top of Mudconnector's Top 20 Telnet/Homepage/Search lists. We were even the first mud interviewed when Mudconnector started that project. I guess we were good for a typical RoT 1.4 mud. By 2001 we boasted 50 to 80 players around the clock and up to 150 at once during major events. But like most muds we've taken our tolls with the MMORPGs but thankfully there'll always be mudders, for now. We still maintain about 20 to 30 (24 hours a day, 7 days a weeks).

Waterdeep is of course heavily modified and has some cool systems, such as our Airship vehicles. Purchasable and customizable vehicles which you can write out the room descriptions, install furniture and even battle against other airships with cannons. We also have a Player Housing system dubbed Property which is a mortal safe version of OLC. Players can buy a room and construct a house/small zone, write room descriptions, add doors, change room flags. There have of course been countless modified.

Besides the operations of Waterdeep my main other hobby is story writing / role playing. Even though Waterdeep started out as a Forgotten Realms based mud, due to the popularity of Final Fantasy 7 at the time (and of course still is) we began implementing ideas and themes from Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 6, creating a unique world made from blending together basically other people's ideas. And so I dubbed it the 'Great Realms' which has developed into its own unique world. Its a medieval world with an 1800s feel to it. There are Makou Reactors which produce a burnable gas instead of an electricity, steam engines and airships and a continent forged from business and trade. Check out our homepage which is a library of content.

And that's all you need to know.

Greetings...

Allow me to introduce myself, I am known as Nisstyre, owner-operator of Waterdeep 'City of Splendors', also known as WaterdeepMUD.  Check out my profile for more information about all that and my history with muds.  One thing I enjoy doing is writing, I've been told I have a talent for it but personally I'm unsure, it could be the most horrific thing you have ever read.  I trust friends but asking the general population of the mud you run, which people tend to fear you isn't a good idea.  Call it too many brown noses in the crowd.  So I'm going to post these stories here.  The stories would be called a novelette since they are connecting chapters.  it involves the world I have created from stolen ideas and themes, mixing Final Fantasy 6 and 7 with AD&D's Forgotten Realms, creating something that might be unique but isn't due to how it was created.

Unknown to even me, I have an epic story I want to tell that only exists in small chunks and pieces within my brain.  I write to exercise my mind and drain my over active imagination.  If I had the talent and means, these stories would be in the form of something like anime, or hell even a web comic.  So I figured I would bring these stories to the general mud crowd here at Mudconnector, to see if these stories are actually enjoyable, or something only myself and a few others can enjoy.  Sadly though like any fantasy world, these's a whole lot to learn about it, and that is what this first post is about.  I've tried to sum up the world in several parts, the first being the game itself.  Then I try to explain the look of society, our medieval theme with technology, and then a short (but still long) version of the history.

More comments at the end...but now the main meat of the post...

Waterdeep, The Mud

Just simply WaterdeepMUD aka Waterdeep 'City Of Splendors' is a heavily modified RoT 1.4 that has operated for 10 years this August.  Originally we planned to base it off Dungeons and Dragon's campaign setting the Forgotten Realms but with the popularity of Final Fantasy 7 (and just my passion from Final Fantasy 6 and then 7) the world became something else.  The Great Realms is a continent made up of unique and stock rot zones and contains a mixture of themes and ideas from both FF games.  There are airships, trains, makou reactors which produce a burnable gas instead of electricity, Kefka and the Vectorian Empire of FF6 and a 'good' Shinra like country dubbed The Tripower which invented to reactors.  This continent is located on the same planet as the Forgotten Realms (Toril) and the mud itself includes a large portion of the main continent Faerun including a good amount of landmark locations like Icewind Dale, Candlekeep and Myth Drannor.

Society...

To stand at Market Square in Westbridge (our redesigned Midgaard) would bring you a mixture of earthly eras.  In general its a medieval world with wizards and knights, swords and dragons.  But there are some modern touches.  Towns and cities are well constructed from brick, cobble stone streets and maintained roads.  Gas lighting and steam locomotives.  Even the skies are a busy place, airships are almost as common as a car on earth.  Society itself is built on the almighty dollar as the countries of the continent learned to do business and trade goods amongst each other.  Industrial revolution has given way to factories and smoke stacks to produce these goods.  The steam locomotives were originally created to transport these goods between the countries and still continue to do, but airships are the main means to move cargo.  Together Trade & Industry gave birth to Corperations as businesses began purchasing its competition and growing larger.  A stock market was formed and even a common citizen could own a small piece of the business.

And yet everyone runs and hides when a monsterous creature rolls into town.

Technology...

Like the medieval feel of society, technology has the feel of being in the 18th century.  A literal term for this theme would be 'steampunk' or 'clockpunk'.  Until roughly 25 years ago coal fueled steam boilers ruled as machinery, driving the industrial factories.  Coal has been replaced by Makou Gas and Steam Engines are slowly being replaced by the 'Makou Combustion Engine' which would resemble a giant diesel engine.  There is no electricity and there are no handheld guns.  With airships and seaships using iron cannons, the technology does firearms does exist and has been used, but wizards tend to hold high ranking positions and unable to defend themselves against these weapons, have outlawed the technology.  There are some other 'modern' type devices around explained using fantasy.  Communication Crystals used on airships are enchanted materia which can 'teleport' a persons voice from crystal to crystal (aka radios).  For the most part technology remains in the major cities, while country towns still use the old fashion methods towards living.  While in a city you would cook on a gas stove and while in the country you'd be cooking on a wood stove.

Quick History...

1273 years ago a meteor fell from the sky and crashed into the northern Great Realms, a region known as Mahn'Tor which is nothing more than frozen wastelands.  But this event would bring chaos with it and cause civilization itself to crumble.  For almost a century the continent was gripped in a major war of small roaming armies.  This was would end when the Elder God of the planet Ao stepped in and forced the people into peace, turning the armies into Clans and allowing the war to continue as civil battles.  After this war of Good & Evil the people of the realms set forth to resettle the continent and began to form the now modern countries.

The continent would have its industrial revolution during the 4th century and then have a 'trade revolution' in the 5th century as the countries began to exchange the goods being produced in the factories with each other.  Business & Trade would give way to Corperations and the Realmism Stock Market during the 6th century.  The study of science would begin in the 7th century when the 'lifestream' was discovered deep inside the planet.  Through studies it was found this liquid and spiritual energy that flowed deep within the planet was the source of mana.  Steam Engines and Firearms would be invited in the 8th century.  During the 9th century the western half of the continent experienced a 'draught' of the lifestream.  Wizards holding power would begin fear of being overthrown, and Firearms which were being held only by high ranking governmental officials would fall into the hands of the common thug.  These thugs would overpower the weaken wizards and take control for a period of time.  Wizards would turn to their enemy science and create a magical weapon like a gun, which used physical (hitpoint) energy to cast magical spells.  This would allow wizards to take back some control and they would return back to power as the lifestream came back.

The Vectorian Empire is one of only two governments to survive the diaster 1273 years ago, better known as Century Zero.  They were responsible for business, trade, the stock market, maintained road systems, steam technology and trains.  With greatness would come corruption and in the 10th century as Vector peaked in greatness, it would begin a war with its southern neighbor.  The Doma Kingdom had supplied Vector with many natural resources through contracts.  While trying to renegotiate the contract Doma demaned more money and Vector refused.  Doma cut off its supplies and Vector began to invade.  This war would draw out and in the end Vector would obliterate Doma from the map.  After this war the Vectorian Empire began to crack.

By the 12th century the Vectorian Empire had now become severely corrupted to the point that the southern half of the country was controlled by criminal syndicates who kindly paid the empire well to turn a blind eye.  These syndicates taxed the people and lined their pockets with the platinum and the 'Southern Tier' cities of Vector began to crumble and fall prey to the criminal elements, while the politicians and officials of the syndicates lived in paradise.  This would cause a Resistance Group to form and begin to fight back.  Through planning the group began to pick apart the syndicates and even bombed the city of Thalos, which had become the paradise home of the Syndicates.  Many high ranking officials were killed.  In return the Syndicates would hunt down the group and do the same to them.  They found the group's headquarters and demanded the town of Torregiano where it was located to hand the group over.  The citizens refused and the syndicate burned the town down with the people inside.  The Resistance Group had actually left the region to visit the west, and returned to this horrific slaughter.  They would plan their attack and remove the crime syndicates from power once and for all.  The plan was launched and completed sucessfully.  Instead of the Vectorian Empire was forced to take control of the Southern Tier now that the Syndicate's funds had disappeared.  Futile to fight again the Resistance Group reformed into a Political group.

The Tripower challenged the Vectorian Empire to an election for control of the Southern Tier, demanding that Vector allows the people to decide.  The other countries of the Great Realms had now turned their eyes at these events, and Vector sorely agreed under the belief that the people would not vote against their Empire.  While Vector said nothing to the citizens, the Tripower preached it would rebuild the Southern Tier and improve life itself, then give the people full control over their own towns.  And with a landslide victory the Tripower Kingdom was born.

The Tripower went to work on improving the Southern Tier with 'Work Projects'.  These massive projects created jobs and improved the economy.  One of the three founding leaders was a genious who discovered how to use the lifestream as an energy source, replacing the Vectorian coal powered steam engines with Makou Gas and Makou Combustion Engines.  The Vectorian Airship had been a failed experiment due to the weight of the engines, the Tripower was able to sucessfully create a working airship with their new lighter engines and began to build the ships at an alarming rate using a new industrial technique called mass production.  Airships were found to be good at moving cargo quickly across the continent.  With all this the Tripower was rushed into the #1 spot of Great Realmism Countries, a spot held by Vector since Century Zero.

Frustrated the Vectorians attacked the Tripower, which both declared war on each other.  During the war of Good and Evil, the elder god Ao had written a book of war which described a civil way of conducting one.  Both countries did so.  While this war went on the Vectorian Empire frantically searched for a new technology to replace Makou and came up with something else they called Magitek.  They unlocked the magical energy found in the race known as espers and found it could be used to power machinery.  Better yet special machines could actually cast magical spells, something only gifted people could do.  This technology was created by Kefka Palazzo, Science & Magic Advisor to Emperor Ganon Vector.  Ganon declared the technology unworthy of researching due to the fuel source, espers.  Kefka continued his research in secret.  Espers were the fuel but it was the crystal known as magicite that was the true fuel.  Magicite is created from the remains of a dead esper after a century or so.  Due to the rarity of these crystals Kefka discovered another way, which could only be crudely described as blending espers.

The war was begining to draw out and the Vectorian countryside was crumbling.  Resources were stretched and funds dwindling.  Some could claim it was Kefka who thought the war could end, as he had Ganon Vector assassinated and assumed power as Emperor.  But truthfully it was the fact Ganon disapproved of Kefka's Magitek technology.  With the murder of Ganon Vector, Kefka declared peace with the Tripower and pleaded for their aid to rebuild the country, something already familiar to the people of the Southern Tier.  The Tripower agreed and Vector's reconstruction began.  Meanwhile Kefka began to advance his Magitek while keeping the Tripower blind.

The eye of the public would turn from politics to the supernatural, as a highly respected council of wizards from the Tower of Sorcery announced another meteor was approaching the planet.  The people claimed this as madness, but quickly shut their mouths when a new red star appeared.  Slowly the pin sized star grew larger and larger.  Fear was in the heart of everyone when this tiny red star had grown to the size of the moon.  Pants were ruined when it grew larger.  The meteor dubbed Ragnarok came close enough to break the atmosphere of Toril and in a last ditch effort to save the world a group of adventures flew to the surface of the meteor.  They discovered a cave with a temple inside which contained four chambers, each holding a elemental beast.  They slayed the beasts and took their magical swords as trophies, returning to the surface of Toril.  Ragnarok then returned back into space and stopped, becoming a stationary moon in the sky.

After a year from the arrival of Ragnarok and the discovery of the Four Elemental Swords, concerns began to rise in Vector.  Espers citizens were disappearing in large numbers and rumors began to spread about the magitek research.  The Tripower began to investigate.  Kefka played games and allowed the Tripower to investigate.  All this time Kefka had been planning, the Tripower had been a major throne in the Vectorian's side.  Ganon Vector's war had been about the pride of Vector.  Vector had been the greatest country in the Great Realms, then it lost half its country to a rebel resistance group.  Then this group took away all their power and money.  Kefka's war would use this same idea to fuel the people, but his ultimate goal was domination of the Great Realms.  The Vectorians and Tripowerians would butt heads again as Kefka made the first move by attacking the Tripower capital city of Torregiano with a new invention using the magitek fuel.  Simply called Magitek Armor these giant machines were ridden by soldiers and could deliver potient magical attacks, giving the common soldier wizard like abilities.  This war would last several years and yet again when Vector's energy and resources dried up.  Kefka's army was destroyed and his money vault empty, Vector had no choice but to retreat and declare a truth with the Tripower.  From that point the empire has struggled to rebuild itself and would show signs of improvement by the year 1274 (2007).

End Comments...

One problem with introducing these stories to a random crowd is, this current novelette dubbed 'The Book of No Name' due to lack of a real title, would be the 2nd of the series.  The first book dubbed 'The War Against The Vectorians' involes the 2nd war between Kefka and the Tripower.  There was a series of stories written and this was an actual acted campaign on the mud, but the series of short stories is rough and doesn't follow like a book or even a story, just random roleplaying posts.  Text wise it was never finished and sometime in the future I will write it out as a true story.

The story follows Trabane Townsend, an outlaw bounty hunter (highly based off Gene Starwind of Outlaw Star) and his child vampire sidkick Ackmon Hawkins (aka James Hawkins of Outlaw Star).  Other characters include Nisstyre Bloodstoner (King of the Tripower), Hathorne Judge (General the Tripowerian Armed Forces), Tawny Judge (Hathorne's Wife, Mayor of Torregiano and Speak of the Tripowerian House of Congress), and Sid Deadwillow (inventor of Makou).

Kefka is known by anyone who has played Final Fantasy 6 and has an advisor named Arvis Jun.  The Vectorian (Magitek) Army is lead by Warhammer, a monster of a human being with no remorse or feelings, a pure killing machine.

And if I haven't said it, I'm long winded when it comes to text, but who isn't when you're a mudder.  That's all I'll post for now, more information about this world is found at WaterdeepMud.com, and the actual stories I want to post here have already been posted there too (18 chapters, 120 pages @ 10 font Courier).

Hope I didn't bore you to death.
