I'm a college student majoring in computer science. I started mudding in 1997 and ran the Blades of Apocalypse MUD from 1999 to 2001. Since 2004 I have been on hiatus from mudding to finish school, but I'm working on a new from-scratch codebase in the meantime. Well, I'm going to start working on a new MUD soon. I've been "planning" it for the last three years, which is to say that I've been way too busy and/or lazy to get anything done, but hopefully this school year will be easier. Anyways, here's some of the ideas and background for it. The setting: near-future, alternate history. After the Cold War, Russia fell into chaos but the rest of the Soviet Union held together as a second-rate power -- kind of like the EU today ;) One of the smaller states, Uzakistan, became a pseudo-democracy that didn't last very long. It was at a strategically important location and uranium rich, which naturally made its citizens a bit paranoid about their neighboring countries. To exacerbate the problem, the former Party, which still had a fair amount of sway, had been pushing propaganda about foreign spies and terrorists. Consequently, in the following elections, people voted for whichever candidate could promise more security, and it pretty quickly got out of hand, with candidates seriously proposing tattooing barcodes on people and having strip-searchs at every train stop. Finally, this slightly loony ex-general steps in and reminds people that it's not about how many civil liberties you give up, but how many nuclear missiles you can simultaneously launch at four different continents on a moment's notice. He was elected. And that's when the rest of the world started to worry about this small well-armed former Communist state with authoritarian tendencies. That's where you come in. See, the rest of the world, and especially the US and the Commonwealth of Soviet States (CSS), have a vested interest in gaining control over Urakistan. The US would like a foothold in Eurasia, and the CSS wants nukes. They need spies brave or foolish enough to infiltrate a hostile, paranoid country and extract secrets and maybe eventually take over the government. And who better than a group of misfit small-time criminals to protect the security of the free world! In fact, you're smaller than small-time; you got caught and thrown in jail on your first screwup. So why do the world's intelligence agencies want you to help them? You see, due to some anti-foreigner policies 10 years ago, everyone was branded with some kind of biological marker that's only available to citizens. If you weren't born in Urakistan, you ain't getting in. Of course, luckily for you, due to some bureaucratic mixup they forgot to remove the marker when they instituted the prisoner deportation program of 1992. In fact, that sounds exactly like it's some incredibly contrived game or B movie plot, but then again, it's a crazy world. There will be four "classes": gangster: one of the low-level mafia thugs that took the fall for the family, good with guns; hacker: good with gadgets and computer systems, bad at fighting; ninja: great at stealth, terrible with guns, no social life; diplomat: charismatic James Bond wannabe, but a lousy spy -- you got caught under official cover and expelled from the country. Stay tuned for more zany political intrigue! Next time: the (somewhat) unique stealth system. | ||
