I launched a telnet BBS today for the mud community. I'll keep it up and running for a while and see if there is any animo. It allows sending instant messages which is lacking on current platforms.
Features:
* Instant private messages * Public and private chat rooms * Mail box of 500 messages * Seven discussion rooms with a history of 500 posts. More rooms will be added on request. * User accounts with a profile, various settings, etc.
Clients:
It's generally easiest to connect using the telnet programs shipped with Windows XP and *nix. If you enable character mode in Zmud it should work as well, most mud clients however don't support character mode. There's not a whole lot of need to use a mud client anyway.
Rules:
The same as on the TMC board though it doesn't (and isn't going to) censor dirty words. I also don't plan to baby sit anything that goes on or assign moderators.
Issues:
The interface is character based working with quick keys and tab completion. This might be difficult for some to adjust to but it does allow executing commands with minimum effort. Press ? or h on the prompt to get a help list.
It's got a worm

Character mode is freaky, especially the one-key press for everything. Pretty discouraging for me. Sure, maybe some people need to edit their Enemies list at a moment's notice, but I'd be more comfortable navigating a standard curses-style menu using the arrow keys.
I dunno, I think it'd be better to have a regular MUD/talker. Sort of a revival of the ancient TMC-MUD.

You're one to speak buddy =]

It's a bit awkward if you've been dealing with linemode for a decade but it's nice and fast once you get used to it.
Regardless, it's been empty for the past two days and will likely stay that way.

That's cool. I miss BBSes. I'll check it out once I get some time, it's been way too nice outside for computers lately.
